MELBOURNE Knights have drawn equal on points with Richmond and Oakleigh at the top of the Foxtel Cup table with a 2-0 win over Frankston yesterday.
The Knights went Monterey Reserve knowing victory, would put them at the pointy end of the ladder, and goals too James Timmons and Joe Spiteri assured that position.
The first opportunity came in the opening minute of the game, when a defensive error by the Pines let Joe Spiteri run lose, and his shot was just cleared of the line.
In the ninth minute a long ball by Anthony Pelikan found Spiteri, who cut the ball back to Dario Matkovic who sliced the ball into the side netting.
Another golden chance went begging in the 22nd minute when Ivan Frangic couldn’t capitalise his diving header, which just went wide of the post.
As the half time break neared Frankston finally broke and allowed the Knights there first goal.
Zoran Petrevski passed it to Dario Matkovic inside the 18 yard box, who cut the ball back to James Timmons, who twisted and turned then drilled the ball into the back of the net to give the Knights a deserved lead.
Eight minutes into the second half, a cross by Zoran Petrevski found Alex Kiratzoglou who laid the ball off to Joe Spiteri who easily put it past the keeper to make it 2-0
Frankston’s first shot on target came in the 56th minute, when a long throw fell to Esala Masi, who controlled the ball then volleyed it straight to the Knights keeper Savas Ozdemir.
Melbourne Knights were searching for a third goal and in 67th minute went close when Pelikan’s shot inside the 18 yard box was well saved by Nick Roganovic.
The final attempt came to the Knights in the 90th minute, when Joe Spiteri whipt in a cross and found Zoran Petrevski, who had his header well saved again leaving the final result at 2-0 the Knights. |
