Knights bad dream continues against Altona

The Melbourne Knights have not made their run home in the Victorian Premier League any easier after surrendering control of their match against fellow danger zone side the Altona Magic.
The Knights kicked off well with experienced midfielder, captain and club legend Danny Tiatto marshalling the side into gear. The Knights were clearly on top of Altona in the opening minutes and could have capitalised after great work by Jean Dubois to beat his marker and gallop into the box, only to be crudely upended as he was about to shoot past Tommi Tomich – only for the referee to wave for a corner kick – leaving the passionate Frenchman bemused.
In the 18th minute – the Knights broke the deadlock after...

The Melbourne Knights have lost 3-0 against old National League rival South Melbourne at John Cain reserve in a match that could be described as absolutely luckless for the Knights.
The match started off slowly in windswept and rainy conditions, with both sides trying their best to play an attractive style of passing football, albeit with the Knights having the upper hand in the first half hour.
The Knights welcomed back Ivica Praiz into the first eleven after Bryan Bran sustained an injury at training during the week. Ben Surey slotted into his left back position with the duo of Praiz and Tiatto left to tussle for ascendancy in the midfield.
Jean Dubois earnt his side a free kick in the 19th minute after some good work against a solid South Melbourne back four.
Kevin Townson stepped up to take the free kick, only to see his ball curl around the wall and bounce favourably just before Zois who gleefully caught the ball dispelling the danger. It was a sign of things to come for the Knights as Zois put in a man of the match performance.

A five minute second half burst was enough to secure all three points and top spot on the Victorian Premier League ladder for the Oakleigh Cannons, after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against the Melbourne Knights yesterday.
The Knights got off to a flying start, with Jean-Charles Dubios got the Knights off to a dream start, working his way into the box and smashing home a shot into the corner of the goal in the opening minute.
It was not the start the Cannons were after, who had lost their previous three games and failed to trouble the scorers during that time.
The Cannons were uninspiring in the first half, and only managed three shots on goal all of which sailed well over the bar. The Melbourne Knights had chances to extend their lead further with efforts by Josip Magdic, Tomislav Skara and Ben Surey just missing the target.

A late Jacob Colosimo goal has cancelled out a fortunate goal from Jesse Krncevic for Richmond to salvage a point from Kevin Bartlett Reserve for the Knights.
A slow start for the Knights resulted in sustained pressure from Richmond after the latter started the stronger of the two. Probing runs from new starter Davey Van't Ship enabled the dangerous Daniel Visevic to find space but was closed down well by Anthony Colosimo and Bryan Bran on the Knights' left wing.
The first chance of the game fell to Krncevic after Michael Ferrante passed the ball into the box between Krncevic and kepper Seb Mattei, but the opportunity resulted in a free kick to the Knights after Krncevic slid into the young Mattei.

The Victorian Premier League Round 15 encounter between the Melbourne Knights and Hume City had it all. Two penalties and three red cards went against Hume City while the valuable 3 points were taken by the Knights.
Two expertly taken penalties by the diminutive Kevin Townson were enough to cancel out Ross Thompson's penalty five minutes into the second half.
The Knights arguably started the game the stronger of the two, although Hume did probe deep into the Knights' defensive line and executed some pressure of their own.
The first real chance fell to Josip Magdic in the 15th minute when a cross from the lively Adrian Zahra bulleted in front of the ex-Perth Glory attacking midfielder. His outstretched leg didn't connect to the ball, much to the relief of former Knights NSL keeper, Lupce Acevski.

THE Youtube clip is only a few years old but already looks like a relic from a hard-to-remember past. The tone is optimistic, the future seemingly bright as Les Murray introduces the news story about the Melbourne Knights' partnership with Melbourne United - a candidate for the brave new A-League being put together by billionaire Frank Lowy.
''Melbourne Knights are set to play a big role in a proposed new national league team,'' Murray begins.
The plans sound exciting. A listing on the stock exchange, average crowds of 10,000-20,000 for the new club within three years. The Knights to play a key role, acting as a feeder club for the new entity, described as ''Australia's own version of Manchester United''.
Those plans may have been pie in the sky. They certainly seem a long way from reality now. When the Knights were claiming back-to-back National Soccer League titles in 1995 and 1996, crowds of up to 12,000 packed Somers Street to watch Europe-bound young stars such as Mark Viduka, Danny Tiatto, Steve Horvath and Josip Simunic.
In recent weeks, crowds have fallen below 800 as the club sits stone cold last on the Victorian Premier League table, seemingly destined for relegation to the suburban tundra of State League One.

A Danny Tiatto inspired Melbourne Knights have come out on top in the Sunshine derby against a spirited George Cross side which never really got going.
The Knights once again conceded early and cheaply, but the side’s endeavour and will to win was enough to see the side through and off the bottom of the ladder – albeit with most results involving clubs at the foot of the ladder going against their way.
A defensive mix up in the first minute gifted George Cross the lead after keeper Sebastian Mattei did well to get down and save the initial effort.
The Knights were 1-0 down and in familiar territory, right behind the eight ball from the get-go.
But credit to the side led by new captain Danny Tiatto, which rallied and played to their strengths of high tempo passing to the wings. George Cross retreated in the hope of coming out of the encounter with a slim result.

Heidelberg United have came out on top in the relegation battle against the Melbourne Knights at the Olympic Village, finally lifting themselves off the bottom of the ladder following a hard fought 3-1 victory.
The match was a tighter contest than the score would suggest, as it proved to be a fast paced and entertaining game for the small, yet passionate crowd. In the end it was two defensive mistakes from Knights defender Ben Surrey that pushed Heidelberg over the line.
Heidelberg took an early lead on the 2nd minute from a set piece. A free kick on the edge of the area saw the ball sent into the goalmouth where Saso Alexovski headed the ball home for the opener.
Another close call soon after saw Heidelberg hit a cracking shot from distance which was parried away by Knights keeper Sebastian Mattei.

A piece of Jean Dubois brilliance has earnt the Melbourne Knights a draw against a resilient Dandenong Thunder lineup.
The Knights, as with most games - controlled the tempo of the encounter with their well oiled passing game. It was the inclusion of that man Dubois into the first eleven which really changed the dynamic of the squad, together with fellow countryman Damien Gleize who arrived from France earlier in the year but has been hampered by injury.
The Knights went on to the attack immediately with the diminutive Kevin Townson proving a real headache for the Dandenong back four, almost making his way past the entire defence in the eighth minute.
Dandenong also had chances of their own in the first stanza.

The return of former Knights coach Ian Dobson to the helm of Green Gully has spelt disaster for the enterprising Melbourne Knights who have now lost their last three games on the trot.
Ivan Duzel was presented with a big selection headache early in the week when given the news that both first choice strikers, Jean Charles Dubois and Tommy Ples would be unavailable due to suspension and injury. This left makeshift forward Gazmend Ajdini the job of leading the line for the injury depleted Knights.
In a goalless first half, the Knights looked the more dangerous thanks to the efforts of Adrian Zahra in midfield and Kevin Townson up forward. Gully goalkeeper Nikola Roganovic was forced to keep the scoreline locked at 0-0 when Zahra's effort was rocketing in towards the top corner. The young custodian expertly parried the ball past the post.

Many believe that fortune favours the brave and the bold. The Melbourne Knights of 2010 under coach Ivan Duzel are both brave and bold in their style of play and committment. Duzel would probably disagree that fortune has favoured his side thus far in the Victorian Premier League.
A ten minute double salvo from Adriano Chiappetta made sure that Northcote City would keep the points against an extremely star-crossed Knights side who have come off with some very unlucky results in the past few weeks.
The game started off in typical fashion with the Knights dominating possession and playing to their slick passing system. It immediately reaped rewards when Gazmend Ajdini was brought down in the 2nd minute of the game after being put through one on one with the keeper and being upended. Liam Cannell stepped up to take his first of two penalties for the match. His effort was well placed but unfortunately for the Knights midfielder, Northcote’s keeper, Chris Theodoridis-Petropoulos picked the correct side and kept Northcote in the contest.

Bentleigh's slim lead enough to defeat Knights

A goal from Kevin Townson was not enough for the Melbourne Knights to hold on for their fourth win of the season after two quick goals from Bentleigh closed the game.
The Knights started the more attacking of the two sides and saw chances fall to Gazmend Ajdini and Kevin Townson, although both shot just wide.
It was good work through Ben Surey which fed through Adrian Zahra on the right wing which led to the Knights first goal in the 17th minute. The agile winger sped past his marker to pin point a cross onto the head of Kevin Townson who made a superb run into the area from deep in midfield, meeting the ball at the back post to put the Knights in front. One - nil and it looked as though Bentleigh had no answers for a speedy Knights side who were attacking in droves and seemed to be opening the game up and threatening to open the floodgates. To Bentleigh’s credit though they absorbed the pressure and equalised only six minutes later against the run of play. An Alex Rojas ball floated from a set piece just inside the Bentleigh attacking half saw Knights keeper Ante Loncaric hesitate in getting to the ball to clear the danger – giving Luke Fitzpatrick the opportunity to flick his header past the Knights custodian who was stuck in no man’s land. The Knights kicked off and tried to continue with their slick possession play but it all came unstuck only four minutes later when Bentleigh leading goal scorer Dado Lokvancic shot a speculative effort from just outside the box to Loncaric’s far left corner which the keeper initially kept out – with former Heidelberg midfielder Anthony Ouliaris having the easiest of tap ins to but the Greens in front. The Knights were down 2-1 and seemingly had done little wrong.

A workmanlike performance from the Melbourne Knights has resulted in a solid 2-0 win over last year's champions, Altona Magic. Ivan Duzel's side were fired up for the game from the get go after last week's disappointing performance against South Melbourne.
The Knights came out with two changes in the starting eleven from last week with Daniel Rocco being replaced by Ryan Filipovic and Gazmend Ajdini taking the place of Jacob Colosimo. The first half began at high speed with counterattacking football from both sides being the order of the day. Altona struggled to make any real impact up front, although their midfield and defence were solid in keeping the scores level. Altona's best chance of the first half came from a Cergovski free kick which was tipped over by and outstretched Loncaric. Sustained pressure from Knights wingers Adrian Zahra and Kevin Townson ensured that Altona were not in a position to over commit in going forward with the Knights enjoying much of the possession.

The match opened up with some very free play from both teams, although South Melbourne did look to have some luck on their side with many stray passes finding their man, while the Knights had the bad luck of having the same sorts of passes being turned over - turning attack into defence. South Melbourne's first chance came in the 27th minute with new signing Joe Keenan cutting into the box around Daniel Rocco and curling the ball past an outstretched Ante Loncaric. It was as this stage that South Melbourne sat back and soaked up pressure from the Knights link up play between Ben Surey and Kevin Townson who beat South captain Ramazan Tavsancioglou on...

The Melbourne Knights have overcome the N.T.C, even though they were down to nine men for the final ten minutes, after bizarre turn of events at Knights Stadium.

N.T.C punished the Knights just minutes later when an unmarked John Reale slotted home the opener courtesy of a back post half volley from close range. Reale’s shot was too good for Melbourne Knights’ Antony Loncaric.
N.T.C had the chance to go two up after Luke O’Dea was pulled down in the box after an exciting run down the left wing. To the N.T.C’s frustration O’Dea failed to convert his own penalty, as Knights’ keeper Antony Loncaric easily parried it away for a corner.

A sense of relief settled on Knights Stadium last night as the Melbourne Knights recorded their first win of the 2010 season. Another healthy crowd of over 1,400 witnessed the Knights concede early on through some good work by ex-Knight Daniel Visevic who finished his opportunity well. But true to form, the Knights character shone through almost immediately as Kevin Townson drilled in a corner onto the head of Jean-Charles Dubois who's header bulleted into the net past an outstretched Stjepan Gal in the 14th minute.

The Melbourne Knights have learnt two very important lessons in their last two games. The season opener against Dandenong showed why 100% intensity is required right at the start of the match to overcome an opponent mentally. This week’s game against Heidelberg United showed that although playing excellent football at a great pace, a two goal buffer can count for nothing in the dying minutes and lose you two points.
The Knights opened the game up against Heidelberg in front of 2,000 fans on Monday night and were immediately on top of play with piercing runs on the right wing coming from Adrian Zahra and Josip Magdić, causing havoc for the slow Heidelberg defence which featured ex-Knights captain Craig Elvin. Fan favourite and returning star Danny Tiatto slotted nicely in the central midfielder role with Ben Surey, controlling the tempo of the game superbly and not giving the ageing Heidelberg side a chance.

The Melbourne Knights kicked off its 2010 season campaign with a loss to last season's Minor Premier and Runner-Up Dandenong Thunder.
A goal in the third minute from young Dandenong midfielder Shane Rexhepi put the Knights behind the 8-ball immediately. Experienced striker Joey Di Iorio doubled the Thunder's lead in the 24th minute to give the Knights faithful a real scare looking at the season's prospects.
The second half began with a new look Knights side - obviously Ivan Duzel succeeded in calming the lads down and getting them to play the simple and attractive soccer they are known for. It was to be expected that such a fresh side was to be a little shocked and not in tempo with the high intensity of a round one match against the previous season's premiers.
Duzel's job was not made any easier however with no less than five Knights players not receiving their International Clearance Certificate's before the game - three of whom are first eleven players. He was at a loss for words in describing the debacle; "I don't know how people expect me to play my full squad at full strength when they haven't been cleared yet, not only do we have to start on three points because of other people's mistakes...

New coach and former Knights player Ivan Duzel has been in charge since October, and said it had taken some hard yards to piece together the playing list.

Speaking after the Knights’ 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly with Green Gully, Duzel said the Knights had compiled a strong list with international experience, which was bound to improve on 2009’s results.
