Knights drop points in last minute

A 92nd minute penalty could have given the Knights all three points at Green Gully Reserve, but a Tommy Fraser miss kick gave both sides a point each.

In what was an ordinary first half of football, Green Gully had the better share of the chances.
The home side should have taken the lead after 15 minutes when a great cross from Scott Muirhead found Brent Fisher at the back post, but he was only able to find the side netting.
Only a minute later, Andy Vargas delivered a stunning ball to the head of Mathew Sanders who put it just over the bar.

The Knights first decent chance came in the 19th minute when Gully keeper Kieran Gonzalez blocked a powerful shot from Aboulaye Diallo, allowing the ball to fall into the path of Hassan Daramy, but unfortunately for the winger he was unable to convert, putting the ball straight back into Gonzalez.

Much of the same continued for the remainder of the first half as both teams went into the change rooms scoreless at half time.

The Knights looked to be the better side after the break – stringing together a number of passes in the 55th minute, lead to Jacob Colosimo latching onto a Shayan Alinejad cross, which forced a superb one handed save from Gonzalez.

But it was the home side that was to take the lead. After a last second slide tackle from Joseph Konyit denied Tom Cahill from opening the scoring in the 56th minute, no one was able to stop Mathew Sanders a minute later as the unmarked striker headed home a crossed ball.

That lead was short lived however, as the Gully defence gifted Tommy Fraser acres of space inviting him to blast the ball into the left corner from outside the box, leaving Gonzalez scratching his head.

Both teams could have taken the lead towards the end of the match as an Andy Vargas free kick forced a great save from Knights keeper Chris May. Aboulaye Diallo could only see his effort go out for a corner, after a splendid run from winger Shayan Alinejad found Diallo in the six yard box.

But it was in the 92nd minute when former Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas brought down Knights substitute Abu Konteh in the box, that handed Tommy Fraser the chance to take all three points for the away side from the spot kick. But a miss kick from Fraser allowed Gonzalez to deny him, and the Knights of all three points.
