Melbourne Knights continue in their pursuit of a first NPL Victoria finals appearance since 2015 when they go up against North Geelong Warriors in a Croatian Derby at Elcho Park on Sunday afternoon.
Knights come into Sunday’s Round 21 clash off the back of a 1-1 draw against league leaders Avondale last weekend.
Luka Kolic put Ben Cahn’s side in front with his sixth goal in all competitions for 2023 before the visitors, who’s seven match winning run was brought to an end rescued a point via a second half Yusuf Ahmed penalty.
Friday’s draw left the Knights in fourth position on the NPL Victoria ladder on 35 points, six clear of seventh placed Altona Magic.
Meanwhile the Warriors, who sit a point adrift of safety in thirteenth place on the league table suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Green Gully.
The Knights and Warriors have already clashed once this season with Ben Cahn’s side running out 3-2 winners at Somers Street on Easter Monday.
Goals from Corey Sewell, Ciaran Bramwell and Gevaro Nepomuceno saw Knights race out to a 3-0 lead before the Warriors managed to reduce the gap on the score line with a pair of late goals.
In total Knights and Warriors have met five times at NPL Victoria level with Knights winning on four occasions and one draw played out between the pair.
Sunday’s match marks the start of yet another busy week for Ben Cahn’s side who remain alive in both the Australia Cup and Dockerty Cup.
On Wednesday Knights will play host to Oakleigh Cannons in the Dockerty Cup Semi Final at Somers Street before taking on Moreland City in home league action next Sunday afternoon.
This Sunday’s Croatian Derby against North Geelong Warriors kicks off at 3pm at Elcho Park and will be live streamed on NPL.TV.
