2021 NPL Round 20 – Knights v Cannons

The Melbourne Knights will return home this weekend, for a tricky round 20 encounter with the Oakleigh Cannons.

Last round, the Knights claimed a point in what was a compelling 2-2 draw at Heidelberg. The back-and-forth manor of the match saw the Knights claim the opener through Mohamad Sumaoro – only to concede just over a minute later. The Knights reclaimed the lead through Gian Albano in the match’s final knockings. The spoils were shared as Heidelberg climbed their way back into the match with a 92nd minute equaliser.

The Oakleigh Cannons dismantled Dandenong City, six goals to one – in round 19 action. Although Dandenong City claimed the lead in the 3rd minute, the Cannons impressively piled on six goals. A hat-trick from Christopher Lucas was the highlight of the match, as he opened his account for the season.

These sides last faced in round 7 of this season at Jack Edwards Reserve, with the match ending in an entertaining 2-2 draw. A James McGarry free kick put the Knights ahead in the first half, before back-to-back Cannon’s goals had the hosts in front after 65 minutes. Minutes after the Cannons took the lead, the Knights received a penalty, and Alun Webb converted to level the match once again – simultaneously securing a point.

The Cannons haven’t claimed three points against the Knights since 2019, however they are enjoying quite the successful 2021 NPL Victoria season thus far, second in the standings.

Be sure to show your support at Knights Stadium this Friday evening, to get the boys over the line in a must-win fixture!
