2023 NPL Round 14 – Knights v Saints

Melbourne Knights aim to break a pair of club unbeaten records when they host St Albans at Knights Stadium in NPL Victoria Round 14 action on Friday night.

Ben Cahn’s side can set a new record for the club’s longest NPL Victoria unbeaten run (seven games) as well as longest home unbeaten run (eight games) on Friday night after matching both milestones with an emphatic 5-0 win over Heidelberg United last weekend.

Gian Albano, Ciaran Bramwell, Trevor Ssemakula, Josh Phelps and Mohammed Sumaoro were all on target as Knights defeated the Warriors for the first time in the league since 2015 which leaves them sitting in fourth position at the halfway mark of the 2023 NPL Victoria season.Knights are already able to match the 30 points they picked up in the entirety of the 2022 season with a win on Friday night with a return to finals football for the first time since 2015 firmly in their sights.

St Albans start the weekend in tenth position, having picked up three wins from the opening half of the season including a 1-0 triumph on the road over Green Gully last weekend.

The two sides have already met once this season, playing out a 1-1 draw at Churchill Reserve on opening day.

A goal from former Knight George Ott had the Saints ahead before Ivan Franjic marked his return to the club with an 87th minute equaliser to seal a share of the spoils for the visitors.

In total Knights and the Saints have clashed seven times at NPL Victoria level, playing out three draws and taking two wins apiece.

Friday’s match kicks off a big week for Ben Cahn’s side who travel to face Bentleigh Greens in Australia Cup Preliminary Round 6 action at Kingston Heath on Tuesday before an away trip to face Oakleigh in the league on Friday night.
