A Warrior is Knighted

Melbourne Knights are pleased to announce the signing of Nikola Jurkovic from North Geelong Warriors for the 2016 NPL campaign.

Jurkovic 17, becomes the second pre-season signing for coach Andrew Marth after securing the signature of Stefan Cali earlier this week.

Knights Stadium will be familiar surroundings for the young defender, who spent five years at the Club as a junior from the aged of 10, before moving down the Princess Freeway in seek of first team football.

Under the guidance of Micky Colina, Jurkovic became an integral part of the Warriors starting eleven that secured promotion to the NPL in 2014, before capping of a personal achievement last season taking out the North Geelong Rising Star award.

“I learned so much under Micky Colina last season, and the increased intensity of playing at the highest level” Jurkovic said.

“When Andrew Marth called, it was a good feeling – this is a massive opportunity and massive Club, it’s every Croatian boy’s dream to play for the Melbourne Knights, so there was no doubt when the approach came”.

It will be difficult for Knights’ fans not to draw comparisons between the playing style of Jurkovic and departing captain Tomislav Uskok, who has recently signed a deal with the Central Coast Mariners. Not only is Jurkovic of similar build, but also a naturally gifted in the Centre Back and Defensive Midfield roles Uskok once fulfilled.

“Tommy [Uskok)] is a champion player, he deserves his chance in the A-League.”

“Someone needs to take his spot, and I hope I can be the one.”

Having supported the Club in his junior days, Jurkovic described feeling right at home the moment he walked into the Club.

“When I was 5 years old I used to come to games, and I remember the atmosphere in those derby games,” Jurkovic said.

“I’m honoured to be wearing the badge, and really look forward to the end of off-season and start playing”.

Further news regarding new players is expected in the coming days and weeks, as well as the release of the 2016 PS4 NPL Victoria Fixture.

The Club will also have news shortly regarding your Melbourne Knights membership for the 2016 season. The Knights is calling all supporters to sign up and show your support in what will be a huge season for all aspects of the Club. #OneLoveOneClub
