Australia Cup 2023 Quarter Finals – Knights v Heidelberg

Melbourne Knights are set for an all-Victorian Australia Cup Quarter Final clash against Heidelberg United at Knights Stadium on Thursday night.

The NPL Victoria duo along with NPL South Australia outfit MetroStars are the only non A-League sides still standing amongst the final eight clubs in the competition.

Knights are on their deepest ever run in the Australia Cup following victories over Campbelltown City and Lions FC along with Preliminary Round wins over Yarraville Glory, Bentleigh Greens, Box Hill United and Corio.

Knights strong cup run has been coupled with their best-ever NPL Victoria season which saw them finish an equal club best fourth to qualify for finals for the first time since 2015 while scoring a club high 51-goals along the way.

Ben Cahn’s side went on to pick up first ever NPL Victoria Finals win with a 2-0 Elimination Final triumph over Port Melbourne before being edged out 1-0 by Premiers, Avondale in the Preliminary Final.

Along the way Knights set a club record eight-match NPL Victoria unbeaten streak and recorded their equal best margin of victory in their 5-0 Round 13 victory over Heidelberg at Knights Stadium.

A superb 70th anniversary season saw Ben Cahn named NPL Victoria Coach of the Season alongside Avondale’s Zoran Markovski.

The Bergers are through to their fourth Australia Cup Quarter Final having beaten Moreton Bay United and Mount Druitt Town Rangers in the final rounds as well as Springvale White Eagles, Kingston City, Avondale and St Albans in preliminary round action.

Knights and Heidelberg, who finished the campaign in ninth have already met twice this season with Knights running out 5-0 winners in the opening clash before the Bergers claimed the points with a 3-2 win on the final day of the regular season.
