2021 NPL Round 11 – The OG Melbourne Derby

It’s the O.G Melbourne Derby Knights fans! The Knights are back at home against long time rivals South Melbourne FC. It’s a generational rivalry that is sure excite even the most tepid of football fans.

Somers Street sees a double header this Friday night as Knights Women’s seniors take on Preston Lions FC in VPLW action, with kick off at 6:15pm. Entry to the game is free between 6:15pm and 6:30pm but no passouts out of the stadium grounds will be given. An entry ticket will need to be purchased after 6:30pm which permits entry to the curtain raiser and the main event.

Croatia and Hellas take centre stage with kick off at 8:15pm! After bowing out of the FFA Cup, following 120 minutes and penalties, the Knights have to regroup with haste to prepare for Friday.

With both sides playing over 200 minutes of football within the last week, squad depth will become front and centre this Friday night.

The Knights currently sit 4th in the league standings on 18 points, however South Melbourne are comfortably in 1st on 22 points, with the side yet to record a loss this season. It will be up to the Knights to provide the first chink in their armour.

In the Knights’ last fixture, they defeated Dandenong City – 1-nil at home, with Alun Webb coming off the bench to slot the winner in the 80th minute. Mohammed Sumaoro also came off the bench to provide Webb with the assist.

South Melbourne defeated Hume City, 2-1 in their last NPL fixture. A late finish saw South Melbourne go 2-nil up in the 89th minute, before Hume scored a consolation, just two minutes later.

The last time these sides faced in a league match, the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate at Lakeside Stadium. South Melbourne got the lead within the first minute, but it was short-lived, as the Knights drew level only 10 minutes later, through Mohammed Awad.

With a fiery clash a given, the Knights will be looking for a strong home crowd support to get them over the line against their long time rivals.

Make sure to get to Knights Stadium and support the Knights in the league, as they seek revenge for being knocked out of the FFA Cup!
