In round 7 of the NPL Victoria season, the Melbourne Knights will travel to Oakleigh to face the Cannons, on Friday, April 9.
The Knights have fallen to fifth in the league standings; however, the table is tight. Oakleigh sit in third, with just one point more than the Knights. Dropping points could see either side falling to the middle of the table.
Last weekend, both the Knights and Cannons played their first FFA Cup fixtures of the season, advancing with ease.
The Melbourne Knights opened the game wide open in the second half of their clash with Old Scotch, scoring three goals to progress to the fifth round. The Oakleigh Cannons defeated Mazenod Football Club 3-nil, away from home.
In the Knights’ most recent league match, they fell short to Heidelberg United at home, 1-nil. Coach Steve Bebic thought that his team was “the better side”, despite the result. Oakleigh’s round 6 match resulted in a 2-1 victory over Dandenong City. After going down in the first half, two second-half goals within the space of five minutes was enough to steal the victory.
The last time these sides faced was in a pre-season friendly earlier this year – the Knights were victorious in a 2-nil win, against a 10-men Oakleigh. The previous competitive match between the two sides was back in the 2019 NPL Victoria season – Oakleigh won this match 1-nil, at Somers Street, however the side has an impressive record agains the Cannons at their home.
Make sure to get on down to Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday night and give the boys a lift in a must-win game!
