Australia Cup 2023 Round of 16 – Knights v Campbelltown

The biggest week in Melbourne Knights recent history continues with an Australia Cup Round of 16 clash against Campbelltown City at Knights Stadium on Tuesday night.

Knights aim to reach the Quarter Finals for the first time in their history in what is the fourth occasion they’ve competed in the Australia Cup national rounds.

Ben Cahn’s side reached the Round of 16 with wins over Corio, Box Hill United, Bentleigh Greens, Yarraville Glory and Lions FC, scoring 20 goals along the way.

Knights recorded their biggest ever Australia Cup national rounds win with a 4-1 Round of 32 triumph over Lions courtesy of a Gian Albano brace along with goals from Mohammad Sumaoro and Mitch Hore. 

Knights come into Tuesday’s clash after booking their spot in their first NPL Victoria Preliminary Final with a 2-0 win over Port Melbourne on Friday night.

Goals from Mitch Hore and Gian Albano sealed a commanding elimination final win and set up a huge clash against Avondale at Avenger Park this weekend.

Friday’s win was another milestone in an increasingly impressive 70th anniversary season which has seen Knights match their best ever NPL Victoria regular season finish of fourth while scoring a club best 51 goals along the way and also setting a club record eight match unbeaten run.

Tuesday’s opponents, Campbelltown City finished second on the 2023 NPL SA ladder and suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Adelaide United youth in their Semi Final first leg on Friday night.

Michael Matricciani’s side are competing in the Australia Cup national rounds for a second time and reached the last 16 with wins over Adelaide Grads Blue, Playford City, Adelaide City, Croydon Kings and a cupset victory over A-League side Macarthur in the Round of 32.

Tuesday’s Australia Cup Round of 16 tie at Knights Stadium kicks off at 7:30pm and will be broadcast live on 10play.
