Melbourne Knights’ three game winning streak came to an end after a 2-1 loss at the hands of Green Gully at Knights Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With second place up for grabs for the hosts, both sides found it difficult to adjust to the heavy conditions underfoot and after a share of possession and minimal chances in the early stages of the contest, it was the visitors who looked to have control as the half progressed.
Chris May was called upon just before the half an hour mark after a scramble in the box where both Osagie Ederaro and Andy Vargas were unable to get past the man between the sticks.
However, there was nothing he could do after Brent Fisher’s attempt at goal hit the back of the net courtesy of a Jason Hayne assist just minutes later.
In what was a mini onslaught at goal for the visitors, May was once again in the midst of the action, pulling off a spectacular save to deny a powerful Hayne shot at goal.
However it was a completely different Knights outfit that turned up in the second half and after continued pressure on the Green Gully defence it was Andrew Barisic who would once again get his name on the scoresheet for the Knights.
The striker pounced on a loose ball in the box after Shayan Alinejad’s initial shot was saved by Gully ‘keeper Kieran Gonzales, capturing his fourth goal in four games since his return to the club mid-season.
Both sides went looking for a winner late in the half and it was the visitors who would succeed in doing so with 15 minutes left on the clock.
A lapse in defence saw substitute Matthew Sanders unmarked in the box, looping his header over May after a brilliant cross in from Ederaro.
Hamid Basma should have put the icing on the cake for the visitors with less than five minutes remaining, however he managed to ruin his one on one chance with May.
With the loss, Knights missed the chance to go three points clear in second place however will look to get back to winning ways against winless Southern Stars at Kingston Heath on Saturday evening.
