Knights finish season as they started, with a win

Melbourne Knights defeated Bentleigh Greens 2-0 at Knights Stadium on Friday night, in the final game of the 2014 NPL Victoria season.

After a slow start to the game, which saw Bentleigh slightly on top in terms of chances created, Knights took the lead just after the half hour mark.

In the 31st minute, Stipo Andrijasevic was brought down in the area, handing Visevic the chance to open the scoring.

Visevic stepped up and saw his initial effort saved, but followed the ball up and buried it in the net at the second attempt.

Joey Monek scored his first senior goal for the club less than ten minutes later, getting on the end of Marijan Cvtikovic’s pinpoint cross at the far post to beat Alistair Bray.

The youngster’s strike, just seven minutes before half time, doubled the home side’s advantage.

While Andrijasevic almost made it 3-0 moments later with a powerful header which flew just over the bar, Knights took the two-goal lead into the interval.

The second period of play was largely uneventful, and Knights was able to see out the contest and finish the 2014 season on a positive note.

Tom Matthews had the chance to pull a goal back for Bentleigh from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. but his powerfully struck effort hit the upright and bounced away.

Leo Athanasiou’s knee injury, which forced him off the field in the 79th minute, was the only sour note of a solid performance, which will no doubt give Andrew Marth hope as the club turns its attention to next season.
