Knights send Rangers packing

An emphatic 8-2 win over provisional league outfit Geelong Rangers has seen the Melbourne Knights progress to the next round of the State League Cup.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for last season’s runner’s up, with the Provy League side opening the scoring via a penalty in the 10th minute. However Their lead was short lived, as the Knights sparked into action and quickly equalized through Marijan Cvitkovic.

Moments later the Knights took the lead as young striker Fenton broke the offside trap and finished with a well-placed shot. The Knights moved the ball around with authority and peppered the visitors goal relentlessly, and it wasn’t long before Jake Nakic found the back of the net, followed by Lois Fenton’s second.

Just as the Knights looked to take a comfortable 4-1 lead into half time, Geelong pounced on a defensive error to pull one back, and give themselves something to play for in the second half.

It wasn’t to be, as the home side came out with intent and snuffed out any chance of an upset. Substitute Yusuf Yusuf rounded the keeper to make it 5-2 early in the half, before a patch of woeful defending from the visitors led to a third for Fenton.

Chris Talajic got his name on the scoresheet with a rocket from 20 yards that took a favourable defection to make it 7-2, and the young winger wasn’t satisfied with the goal , attempting two spectacular long range efforts that drew the keeper into fine saves.

Fittingly Jake Nakic, who was a stand-out all game, got the last goal with a well-placed shot from outside the box.

The 8-2 win progresses the Melbourne Knights into the next round of the cup, where their opponents will be known shortly.
