Women bolstered by return of Balta

Former Women’s Premier League Heidelberg United player, Lucy Balta, is back at the Knights and ready for the 2012 season.

Balta, who started her career with the first Knights Women’s team in the late 90s, is thrilled to be back where it all began. “It’s great that the Knights relaunched the Senior Women’s Program a couple of years ago and this year I was able to come and play here,” explained Balta. “Work commitments forced me to give up the rigorous WPL schedule so I’m rapt to be back where I first kicked off my career, at a club that I’ve always supported.”

Lucy has high hopes for this season and this women’s squad, who hope to improve on their finals finish from last season. “The reason I chose this team is that there is a lot of potential here and I wanted to be a part of that. This is a young, but talented squad. I just hope that some of my experience can be of help to the team and the club.”

Balta’s experience includes 10 years in the Victorian Women’s Premier League, where she represented both Keilor Park and, more recently, Heidelberg United. A creative attacking midfielder, Lucy has been known to step up for the team when required. “When the goal keeper was injured or suspended, I played keeper for Heidelberg a few times,” she laughed. “Look, wherever I’m needed, that’s where I’ll play.”

With many returning players in the Knights Women’s line up, the squad is poised for another outstanding season, which kicks off this Sunday at Knights Stadium against Sunshine George Cross at 1pm.
