Knights make second half comeback against Gully

The Melbourne Knights have recorded yet another victory in their impressive 2019 NPL Season after defeating local rivals Green Gully SC 2-1 on Friday night at Knights Stadium.

Micky Colina made one change to the starting line up that defeated Pascoe Vale in their previous fixture.

Nikola Jurkovic returned from suspension in place of Ivan Grgic in the centre of defence.

The Knights made life difficult for themselves by conceding yet another early goal, a trend which which is becoming a reoccurring theme this season.

A delivery into the area from Jonathan Bounas found former Knights player Timmy Purcell at the back post and he somehow bundled the ball over the line to give the visitors the lead after only 8 minutes.

Soon after, Nikola Jurkovic thought he had levelled the score for the home side only 2 minutes later but his superb header was ruled out to a dubious offside decision.

The Knights continued to dominate possession for a majority of the first half but found it difficult to penetrate the Green Gully defence in what was a mirror image of the first half in the Original Melbourne Derby a few weeks ago.

The second half began much like the first, with the Knights dominating their opponent with their passing game and just had to patient to find an opening.

It would be the introduction of last week’s  super sub hero Atilla Ofli, who would again change the game on its head.

After his introduction, some great link up play with Hamish Watson saw Ofli through on goal but his shot was well saved by Jerrad Tyson who was having a superb game in goal for the visitors.

From the resulting corner, a great delivery from Corey Sewell found an unmarked Watson inside the area whose thunderous header found the back of the net to put his side on level terms after 74 minutes.

Only three minutes later, the Knights would take a much-deserved lead. Ofli, who was being a nuisance down the left-hand side was brought down on the left hand flank as the Knights were awarded a free kick. Yet another superb delivery by Sewell was this time met by the head of Tomislav Uskok who put a perfectly placed header into the back of the net.

The Knights would comfortably hold on to all 3 points and remain in 3rd spot on the table after 10 rounds of football

This Friday night sees the Knights with another home game as they take on Kingston City at Knights Stadium on Friday night at 7:45pm.
