NPL Round 3 Preview – Northcote City FC v Melbourne Knights FC

Melbourne Knights FC will be looking to chalk up a win on the road when they face off against second from the bottom, Northcote City FC at John Cain Memorial Park.

The match, scheduled on Labour Day, a public holiday in Victoria, will kick off a 3 match away stint which will see the Knights travel to Northcote, Broadmeadows and Bentleigh before returning home for the original Melbourne Derby clash against South Melbourne FC in round six

Last week, Aljosa Asanovic’s side suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss to league leaders Pascoe Vale FC at home, which saw the Knights accumulate a total of 5 yellow and 2 red cards by the end of regulation time. As a result, Shaun Timmins and Nikola Jurkovic will serve one match bans and will not be eligible for match selection.

After two rounds, the Knights sit mid table in 6th position on 3 points, due to their round one win against Oakleigh Cannons FC and round two loss to Pascoe Vale FC. Despite last week’s loss, the Knights haven’t failed to score in both matches, with Nikola Jurkovic, Nate Foster, Kym Harris and Caleb Mikulic all sitting on one goal.

Northcote City FC on the other hand have coughed up a series of away losses in the opening rounds of the Victorian NPL, first succumbing to Pascoe Vale FC 4-1 (accumulating 6 yellow and 1 red card in the process) and then to Hume City FC 1-0 in round two. The round three match against the Knight’s will be Northcote City’s first game in front of a home crowd this season.

Playing on the back of recent losses, both teams will be looking to make an early impact to generate some momentum going forward into the competition, especially the Knights, who will be looking to claim a maximum of 9 points on the road before their clash against rivals South Melbourne FC.

Who to watch
For the Knight’s, Caleb Mikulic has been generating some fine form in his first two matches. With a goal under his belt, Mikulic will be looking to capitalise on his current form and create some exciting pieces of play in Mondays match.
