Melbourne Knights’ top flight survival all comes down to one last fixture this Sunday, as the Knights and Dandenong City battle it out at Lakeside Stadium to see who will partake in the top flight next season.
The two clubs have never competed in the same league, with this fixture ensuring the wait will have to be at least another season longer.
Dandenong City recruited heavily in the preseason and looked set for automatic promotion until a horror run of injuries saw them surrender top spot in the last few weeks of the season.
Their win last week against Moreland Zebras earned Stuart Munro’s men another chance of promotion, however it didn’t come without a cost, with key player Steven Topalovic seeing red in the final minutes.
City have welcomed back a host of players back from injury and possess a squad more than capable of taking it up to the Knights. They will also be buoyed by the 3-2 win earlier in the year in the FFA Cup.
Mate Dugandzic, Ljubo Milicivic and Damien Miskulin are all names who would be familiar to Knights fans, having all once called Knights Stadium home.
Ben Surey has had a fortnight to prepare his squad for this fixture, with the squad playing out a friendly draw against Hume City last week.
Melbourne Knights ended their season with back to back wins against sister clubs North Geelong and St Albans Saints, and will now need to defeat another Croatian backed club in as many competitive fixtures to ensure survival.
Kick off is @ 3:30pm – Lakeside Stadium
