Melbourne Knights have bolstered their defensive stocks with the addition of Joshua Phelps ahead of the 2023 NPL Victoria season.
The towering 6’4” central defender makes the move to Somers Street from the United States where he plied his trade for USL League One Champions South Georgia Tormenta FC.
The 29-year-old, who is originally from Australia spent six seasons with Tormenta culminating in this year’s Championship winning season, in which he played 30 matches.
Prior to his time with Tormenta Phelps played in the US College system with Thomas Terriers and UNC Pembroke Braves.
Despite operating primarily in the centre of defence, the versatile Phelps was also utilised as a striker on occasion during his time at Tormenta Stadium.
Phelps said he couldn’t wait to return to Australia and get started at Somers Street.
“I was excited for the chance to play under the new manager Ben Cahn whilst also continuing to develop myself as a player,” Phelps said.
“The decision to leave the US and come back to play in Australia wasn’t easy, but the new challenge of ahead of adding to the long history of Melbourne Knights excites me.
“The chance to add to the history of this club is a definite motivator to have a successful season.
“We want to make sure that we’re playing a style of football that excites the fans and makes them want to come out and watch us week in week out.
“The growth happening around Australian football is exciting, to be a part of an ambitious club is a challenge I’m keen for.”
Phelps, who will wear the number 3 jersey is Knights eighth confirmed new signing ahead of the 2023 NPL Victoria season.
