Knights celebrate Mackay FV HOF induction

Melbourne Knights Football Club is proud to celebrate the posthumous induction of club great Jimmy Mackay into the Football Victoria Hall of Fame as part of the 2025-26 class.

James Birrell Mackay, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 19 December 1943, arrived in Melbourne on a working holiday in 1965 at the age of 22. He had already played junior football with Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic and senior football with Airdrieonians in Scotland before signing with Croatia.

Mackay made an immediate impression, coming on at half-time in the Dockerty Cup Final that year. Although the side fell 1-0 to Slavia, it marked the beginning of a memorable chapter at the club. Over nearly 200 appearances between 1965 and 1972, the Scottish-born midfielder became a cornerstone of the team. He was instrumental in one of the club’s most successful seasons, helping Croatia claim a famous treble of the State League, Dockerty Cup and Ampol Cup. A second Dockerty Cup followed in 1969, and Mackay was part of the side that won the Victorian Championship in 1968. He remains a member of the Melbourne Knights Team of the Century.

Beyond the club, Mackay excelled in representative football. He made 27 appearances for Victoria between 1967 and 1976, scoring four goals and ranking among the most-capped players for the state in that era. At national level he earned 52 caps for the Socceroos between 1970 and 1975, scoring five goals, and played every minute of Australia’s three matches at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany.

He is best remembered for the goal that sent Australia to its first World Cup. On 13 November 1973 in Hong Kong, in the decisive play-off against South Korea, Mackay struck a thunderous 30-yard shot past the Korean goalkeeper in the 70th minute. The 1-0 victory booked Australia’s place at West Germany 1974.

He was inducted into the inaugural Football Australia Hall of Fame in 1999. Tragically, Mackay passed away suddenly in December 1998 at the age of 54.

Melbourne Knights President Tony Topcic said the recognition was richly deserved.

“Jimmy Mackay is one of the true legends of this club and of Victorian football,” Topcic said. “He arrived as a young Scot on a working holiday and left an indelible mark on Melbourne Knights and the Australian game. That goal against South Korea remains one of the most important moments in the history of the Socceroos, and we are proud that it was a Melbourne Knights player who delivered it.

“To have Jimmy named in our Team of the Century and now inducted into the Football Victoria Hall of Fame is a wonderful tribute to everything he gave the club and the sport. This honour keeps his legacy alive for the next generation of Knights players and supporters. We are honoured that he wore our colours and that his family has continued to be part of the football community.”

The club extends its congratulations to the Mackay family and to all of the 2025-26 Football Victoria Hall of Fame inductees.
