Calandrella re-signs to take Knights into new era

Melbourne Knights is delighted to announce that Head Coach Michael Calandrella has re-signed to lead the club into the 2027 National Premier Leagues Victoria season and beyond.

Calandrella’s first season at the Knights proved transformative. Appointed in September 2025 following the club’s relegation from the NPL, he was tasked with rebuilding a proud club that had endured a difficult campaign.

In 2026 he delivered emphatically, guiding Melbourne Knights to the Victorian Premier League 1 championship and immediate promotion back to the top tier of Victorian football. The Knights finished the regular season with 15 wins, four draws and five losses, claiming the title and returning the club to the NPL where its history and supporter base demand it belongs.

Reflecting on the achievement and the year ahead, Calandrella said the decision to stay was straightforward.

“We’re really looking forward to the new year back in the NPL. I’m honoured to be leading this club again,” he said.

He also spoke about the unique pull of the Knights and the motivation it provides.

“I think this club means more to our supporters than just the football club. It’s their community, it’s part of their life. And I realised that quite quickly. It definitely gives you the extra drive to do as much as you can for them because when you win a game or you’re doing well you see the joy in all our supporters, it’s very special.”

Interest in his services emerged after the successful promotion campaign, yet Calandrella was clear about his priorities.

“Look, there was attention, but yeah, it wasn’t in my thoughts. I knew that after the season we had that this is where I want to be, and I want to be the one to lead this club into the NPL. Back in the top league. I didn’t have to think twice.”

The re-signing provides continuity as the Knights prepare for the challenges and opportunities of NPL football in 2027. Calandrella will continue working with his coaching staff, including assistants Anthony Calandrella and Daniel Genovesi, as the club builds on the momentum of a championship-winning return to the top flight.

Melbourne Knights President Tony Topcic welcomed the news, praising the coach’s impact on and off the pitch and the strong connection he has forged with players and the wider community.

The club looks forward to continuing its journey under Calandrella’s leadership as it returns to the NPL.
