2021 FFA Cup Round 5 – South v Knights

In round 5 action of the FFA Cup, the Melbourne Knights will travel to South Melbourne, in the first of two matches they will play this week.

Back at the beginning of April, the Knights defeated Old Scotch SC in Hawthorn 3 goals to nil, to progress to the fifth round. South Melbourne and Werribee City provided a 9-goal thriller, South Melbourne progressed with a 6-3 win.

Both sides have fared well so far in the league, South Melbourne sit on top, and the Knights are four points behind them in 4th.

In the Knights’ last fixture, they triumphed cross-town rivals – Dandenong City, winning 1-nil at home. Second-half substitutes Mohammed Sumaoro and Alun Webb linked up for the winner in the 80th minute.

South Melbourne also come off the back of a league win. An exciting finish saw South Melbourne go 2-nil up in the 89th minute, before Hume scored a consolation, just two minutes later.

In the too distant past, Knights fans will surely remember the last time the two sides faced off in FFA Cup action. Back in 2019, the Knights emphatically put a stop to Souths Cup run at home in round 7. The win solidified for the Knights a berth in the round of 32, where they hosted A-League Adelaide United.
