2021 NPL Round 8 – Knights v Magic

The Melbourne Knights return to Somers Street this weekend to face the relegation-battling Altona Magic in round 8 of NPL Victoria action.

After last week’s thrilling draw with the Oakleigh Cannons, the Knights remain in fifth – four points off the pace of South Melbourne at the top. Altona have struggled this season, they’re in thirteenth – four points from safety, without a win to their name.

Last week, the Knights played out a 2-2 draw with the Oakleigh Cannons, in a long night at Jack Edwards Reserve. A James McGarry free-kick and an Alun Webb penalty was enough to see the Knights steal a point in odd circumstances. The match was played until the 123rd minute, as medical attention was needed for an official during the game – thus the 20-minute stoppage in play.

In Altona’s previous match, they also played out a 2-2 draw, this time against the Dandenong Thunder. Goals for the Magic in the 87th and 93rd minute from Harrison Reeves and John McShane, saved the point in the dying stages.

The last time these sides competitively faced, was in the 2019 season. The Knights were victorious 2-1 in a nail-biter. Caleb Mikulic opened the scoring just after half-time, before Altona equalised in the 89th minute. Hamish Watson stole all three points back with a goal in the 94th minute, leaving the Magic empty-handed at home.

Make sure to be at Knights Stadium this Friday to see the boys in action and cheer them on in a must-win game!
