2023 NPL Round 9 – City v Knights

Melbourne Knights make the trip to CB Smith Reserve on Saturday afternoon for a first ever NPL Victoria clash against Moreland City.

Ben Cahn’s side look to continue their strong run of form in Saturday’s Round 9 clash, having won five of their last six matches in all competitions and sit fifth in the league as they seek a return to finals football for the first time since 2015.

Moreland City are competing in the Victorian top-flight for the first time in 75 years this season after gaining promotion by finishing top of NPL2 in 2022.

Melbourne Knights come into Saturday’s match off the back of a 3-2 Easter Monday victory over the league’s other newly promoted side, North Geelong Warriors.

Ciaran Bramwell netted his fourth goal in three games with Corey Sewell and Gevaro Nepomuceno also on target as the Knights cruised to a 3-0 lead before the visitors grabbed a pair of late goals to tighten the score line.

Moreland suffered a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Green Gully in their last league outing and sit tenth on the NPL Victoria standings with eight points to their name.

Adrian Mathers side also played midweek, running out 3-0 winners over State League Four East outfit Croydon City on Wednesday night.

Both clubs also discovered their next Australia Cup opponents on Wednesday with the pair being drawn against lower league opposition in Preliminary Round 5.

The Knights will travel to face NPL 3 side Box Hill United while Moreland will play host to State League 2 South-Easts Mooroolbark SC.

Three points at CB Smith Reserve on Saturday afternoon could see Ben Cahn’s side finish the weekend as high as third on the NPL Victoria ladder as they surpass the one third mark of the 2023 campaign.

Saturday’s match kicks off at 3pm at CB Smith Reserve and will be live streamed on NPLTV.
