Knights prevail in seven-goal thriller

Melbourne Knights defeated Green Gully 4-3 in an entertaining match at Knights Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Stipo Andrijasevic gave Knights the perfect start, pouncing on a poor backpass by Stephen Downs before running into the box and placing a shot past Green Gully keeper Kieran Gonzalez.

Marijan Cvitkovic doubled Knights’ lead in the 16th minute when his cross from the left, intended for Stipo Andrijasevic, found the back of the net.

Jordan O’Doherty made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute. Shayan Alinejad played a nice ball across the six-yard line to O’Doherty, who cooly took a touch before slotting it into the goal.

Cvitkovic was on the scoresheet again in the 33rd minute, receiving the ball from Daniel Visevic, the 2013 VPL Gold Medallist had no trouble beating Gonzalez from inside the box.

Knights were hardly troubled throughout the first period, and carried the 4-0 lead into the break.

Green Gully managed to pull a goal back in the 65th minute when Matthew Sanders pounced on an error by Tomislav Uskok, before slotting the ball past O’Farrell who was left stranded.

Sanders again popped up with a goal just five minutes later. Ben Surey coughed up possession in Knights’ defensive half, allowing Sanders into the area. The Gully player finished well past O’Farrell from a tight angle.

Matthew Reid gave Knights a scare, putting the ball in the net in the 83rd minute to make it 4-3. Knights, however, were able to see out the contest and secure the three points.

Andrew Marth’s men now turn their attention to next week’s NPL Victoria clash, against newly relegated side Goulburn Valley Suns on Sunday, with kick off at 3PM from Knights Stadium.
