Knights put 5 past Eagles

On an uncharacteristically warm Winter Sunday afternoon in Melbourne, the Melbourne Knights hosted the Springvale White Eagles at Knights Stadium, and it was the Knights who came out on top with a commanding 5-0 victory.

Mathieu Welmant put the Knights ahead right on the stroke of half-time before Colosimo added a second on the hour mark and then scored his second ten minutes later to make it 3-0.

In the last ten minutes Josip Magdic and Mathieu Welmant added a goal each to seal the massive victory.

Knights boss Paul Magdic made just one change to his side that fell to Green Gully last week replacing Adam Zilic with Mathieu Welmant.

Springvale player/manager Bojo Jevdjevic made two changed to his eleven that fell to a gut-wrenching loss against Oakeligh with both Adam Ewin and Gojko Ponjevic making way for Dejan Erakovic and Stojan Milojevic.

The sides were evenly matched in the first 25 minutes with neither creating any clear-cut chances on goal.

Goran Zoric, like last week, was Springvale’s spark in their attacking third with his lightning quick pace down the left wing.

Jacob Colosimo had the first shot on goal in the match on 31 minutes though he was never going to score from such a tight angle with the ball as expected going way over the bar.

Welmant had a shot blocked by Augustin on 38 minutes with Josip Kozic’s shot from the rebound deflecting off one of his own players and out for a goal-kick.

On 43 minutes Jacob Colosimo had the fantastic opportunity to break the dead-lock when he was played in one-on-one with Scott Augustin but the goalkeeper ran off his line just in time to block Colosimo’s strike.

But the Knights fans dissapointment turned into delight minutes later when Mathieu Welmant headed his side into the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Yusuf Yusuf delivered a pin-point cross from the right flank to Welmant who had the easiest of tasks to head the ball home from close range.

The Knights dominated the opening fifteen minutes of the second-half and were rewarded for their superiority when Jacob Colosimo scored the second on the hour mark.

Josip Kozic played in a fantastic cross to the centre from the left wing with Colosimo’s initial effort blocked but he fumbled his rebound over the line to double the Knights advantage and send the home fans into rapture.

The Knights continued their dominance of the match adding a third on 70 minutes. Welmant played in a great through-ball to Colosimo who tucked away his shot beatifully past Augustin.

Springvale’s misery was compounded with seven minutes remaining when Josip Magdic scored the Knights fourth with a clinical finish from inside the box.

It got worse for Springvale just a few minutes later when the Knights found a fifth. Josip Magdic played in Mathieu Welmant who slotted the ball past Augustin for his second of the match.

Welmant almost got his hat-trick in injury-time but his cracking shot from the edge of the area cannoned off the crossbar.

Next week is a week off for the VPL with the Queens Birthday long weekend but in a fortnights time the Knights take on VTC on Tuesday June 14 whilst Springvale host the other relegation threatened club St. Albans Saints on Sunday June 19.
