Forced to play a catch-up match after their round 11 game was postponed due to poor weather, the Melbourne Knights have narrowly lost 2-1 to the Oakleigh Cannons.
Starting XI: Thomas Manos (GK), Jack Marth, Thiery Iradukunda, Ayden Brice (C), Anthony Duzel, Luka Celic, Gian Albano, Anthony Frangie, Trevor Ssemakula, Jack Morton, Steve Sokol
Substitutes: Harry Cakarun (GK), Fuki Ishibashi, Joseph Colina, Andy Robertson, Mohamad Sumaoro, Luka Kolic
Over the four-day break, head coach Steve Bebic retained a similar squad, making one change – Steve Sokol for Mohamad Sumaoro, who started on the bench.
The Knights were blitzed in the opening minutes of the game, unable to hold composure and possession. The visitors got off to the best of starts, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes. Tyson Holmes and Joe Guest put the Cannons 2-0 up after just seven minutes. However, impatience was averted as the Knights carried on with the task at hand. The formula was in motion, as the Knights found themselves back in the match soon after.
After the half-hour mark passed, Albano was back at his best in front of goal once again. His strike dragged one back for the Knights in the 31st minute. Albano now moves into equal-fifth on the goal scoring charts, scoring his sixth league goal of the campaign.
The Knights entered the half a goal down, yet plenty of fight was left to give. A trying effort made by the boys and after a competitive second half, neither side gave way. After 90 minutes, the Knights still trailed 2-1, resulting in their eighth loss of the season.
Now that we’ve caught up with the rest of the competition on games played, the Knights currently sit in ninth, five points away from the top six.
In a twist of fate, the Knights have drawn the Oakleigh Cannons as their Australia Cup round seven opponents. Stay tuned for more information related this this huge upcoming fixture.
