Late goal unable to turn the tide at Knights Stadium

The Knights have suffered their second defeat of the season after going down 3-1 to the Sharks in Round 2 NPL action.

After a sluggish start to the match, it was clear the Sharks came to Somers Street for some of their own revenge against the Knights, after being knocked out by the side in the 2023 Preliminary finals.

Through Albano and Semmy, the Knights had some early plays forward, with Semmy, similarly to last week, finding himself involved in most plays, using his speed to outpace his opponents.

A quick Sharks outfit were able to capitalise off a missed corner set piece after Amanhomm Khamis received the ball at his feet in front of the box unmarked. A deflection saw his shot find it’s way into the back of the net giving Port Melbourne the advantage. From then on, the momentum was firmly with the Sharks, with the opponents holding most of the possession for the duration of the first half.

Newcomer, Tom Woerndl made his first appearance for the Knights, starting the match and proving to be an aerial threat during corner set pieces, finding himself on the receiving end of three on/off target headers, the best of them coming in the 50th minute.

The Sharks made further strides toward the W after Maker Maker delivered the side their second goal. Unmarked, Maker outran Whyte to find himself some space on goal, and unchallenged, fired true to target, beating Oldfield.

Sealing the Knights’ fate, the Sharks drew blood once more in a similar fashion thanks to Iliya Shalamanov-Trenkov.

The Knights had a last-minute salvo thank to Mitch Hore, after Semmy delivered yet another ball into the box, however, despite the goal, the disparity between the two sides was too far to overcome so late in the game.

The Knights are set to face off next against long time rivals Avondale FC at 7:30pm at Knights Stadium on Friday, 23 February.
