Watson rounds out deadline day action

The Melbourne Knights have signed former Wellington Phoenix striker Hamish Watson in a frantic finish of the transfer windows deadline day.

Watson, a New Zealand national arrives at the club via Team Wellington playing in the New Zealand national league, having scored 8 goals in 12 starts in last year’s campaign.

The tall striker was on Phoenix’s A-league roster in three separate stints, spending over 3 years with the Wellington based A-league side.

Described as a classic target man, Watson possesses the strength, speed and nose for goal to be a threat in the front third for the Knights in the 2019 season. It’s hoped that Watson is the prolific striker the club has been looking for as it enters the 2019 NPL season with lofty ambitions.

In other deadline day action, the Knights have re-signed 2018 goalkeeper Jordan Gifkins into the squad after new signing Rani Dowisha was released by the club earlier in the week.

In other transfer news, club forward Kym Harris has also moved on after spending 2017 and 2018 with the club. He scored 10 goals from 32 games including the memorable hat trick in the relegation playoff game in late 2017.

The club would like to wish Dowisha and Harris all the best in their future endeavours.

Both Watson and Gifkins will be available for selection in this Sunday’s Friendship Cup against Sydney United 58 kicking off at 3pm at Knights Stadium which is the last match before the season proper.

With the transfer window now shut as of 5pm Melbourne time, Micky Colina’s squad of 20 is complete. For 2018 & 2019 Knights members, look out in the mail for the 2018/19 Club yearbook and magazine due to hit your letterboxes late next week.

Melbourne Knights FC Juniors will also be hosting an all-day gala day against North Geelong Warriors at the club from 9am with the offices open for membership.

All pre-paid memberships will be available for pickup on Sunday and for those that haven’t yet – buy your membership this Sunday to avoid the rush at the Round 2 match against Altona Magic at home in three weeks time.

Tickets for the match are $10 with 2019 Gold and Corporate members receiving free entry.
