The Melbourne Derby NPL R6 Preview – Melbourne Knights FC v South Melbourne FC

Bragging rights will be up for grabs when the original Melbourne Derby returns to Somers Street this Friday night as your Melbourne Knights take on long time rivals South Melbourne FC. With perfect playing conditions forecasted for this Friday night, the match will surely be a crowd pleaser.

The match, scheduled for Friday the 6th of April, will see South Melbourne FC travel to Knights Stadium, pitted against a hungry Melbourne Knights side, with kick off scheduled for 7:30pm. Both teams enter this weeks NPL match-up bruised and battered, after both suffering early exits from the opening rounds of the Westfield FFA Cup, with both clubs striving to revive their respective seasons, sparks are sure to fly in the next installment of the oldest rivalry in Australian football.

Going into the derby, the Knights currently sit in 8th position on five points, accumulating one win, two losses and two draws in the last five rounds of the Victorian NPL. Whilst trying to regain a firm momentum in this year’s NPL competition, Asanovic’s men know that if there is a match that can re-ignite their season after their thrilling round one win, this is the one:

Similarly to the Knights, South Melbourne FC are on a total of five points after one win, two losses and two draws and sit just above the Knights in 7th position due to goal difference from their round two demolition of Dandenong Thunder SC which ended in a score of 9-0 and locked in South Melbourne’s only win of the season thus far.

With both teams sitting so close to each other on the table, sharing equal points and record of wins, losses and draws, it’s obvious that there isn’t much separating the two teams this year.

With the last of the fine weather promised for Friday nights match-up, it’s sure to be a large crowd as this age-old rivalry continues to deliver exciting football and brings something special to the NPL fixture twice throughout the season.
