While Saturday morning’s pre-season hit out ended in a 3-1 loss to Avondale FC, it was a good opportunity for fans and club members alike to get their first look at our new signings for the upcoming 2016 campaign.
One of those new signings is Dean Campelj, who signed for the Knights after spending last season with Avondale FC.
He was one of the few that played the full 90 minutes of the fixture against his old side, in a match-up that will become a local derby of sorts. Avondale will play also their home games at Knights Stadium in 2016 as they move from Avondale Heights Reserve.
Campelj is fitting in seamlessly into life at Knights where he’s becoming comfortable in his new surrounds at Somers Street.
“I’m fitting in really well. I’m sitting next to Ben [Surey] and he’s really helping me,” Campelj said.
A 90 minute showing will be a good kick starter for Campelj’s fitness as the season is just a month away.
“It was good to get 90 minutes. Some boys didn’t. In patches I showed some things, but obviously we have to work a lot harder, and keep going.
“We’ve still got a month until the season – I’m looking forward to the next month.”
After the match, Campelj also offered some insight into Avondale and their team that played on Saturday morning, in contrast to the youthful Knights side that was put up against them.
“Considering a lot of us haven’t played together, in the second half I think we dominated them. In the first half we were just adjusting.
“They were playing their first eleven and were quite dynamic up front. They didn’t have an out-and-out striker and kept rotating. It was good to get used to Stabba’s [head coach Andrew Marth] system, too.”
While Knights Stadium’s pitch #2 provided some problems for Knights, Campelj is adamant that the boss’ system will be one that’s hard to play against come the season proper at Somers Street..
With an emphasis on moving the ball quickly, the new signings Campelj included are relishing the start of the season.
We kick off the 2016 home and away season against Green Gully at Home, on the 19th February. Kick Off is at 8:30
