PREVIEW: Knights v Avondale

Melbourne Knights play host to tenants Avondale FC this Friday night and for the second time this season head into a fixture fresh from a coaching departure.

A horror fortnight spelled the end of Eric Vassiliadis’ short tenure as Knights head coach, with Ben Surey agreeing to take the reins again for the remainder of the season.

The current predicament is simple for the Knights’, win as many games as possible and hope to escape the clutches of relegation, or face the lottery of a relegation playoff game. That is, of course, unless a run of wins to the bottom two places sides puts the Knights in danger of the automatic relegation spots.

Surey will be hoping to fire the squad up in an effort to repeat the 1-0 home win against Hume City, when he last took the position in the aftermath of Andrew Marth’s departure earlier in the season.

Recent history has seen Avondale FC record the past 3 wins against the Knights, scoring 12 goals in the progress. That makes horror reading for the Knights who have conceded 9 goals in the past 2 games.

The stats show where the difference is between 4th placed Avondale & 12th placed Knights, despite the Knights scoring 1 more goal than their opponents, they have also conceded an alarming 19 more goals.
Avondale currently boast the second best defence in the league averaging just under 1 goal a game.

Melbourne Knights currently sit 5 points behind 11th placed Kingston City who still have a game in hand, and if there is any possibility for a late charge towards safety it must start with a win this Friday night.
