Veteran Knight re-signs for 2019

Melbourne Knights Football Club are proud to announce current captain Marijan Cvitkovic as our first re-signing for the 2019 season.

Cvitkovic agreed to terms with the club, as the long-serving favourite son put pen to paper to jump into the 2019 squad after having an outstanding year and reconnecting with some exceptional form in 2018.

If you were to look up the word ‘veteran’ in a Melbourne Knights’ dictionary, there would be a small but respectable list of names of clubmen who not only earned the right to wear the distinctive Knights red jersey by coming up through the ranks; but those who have spent or are now spending their time shaping the club into it’s current form and ensuring that future generations stay engaged from an early age.

The Cvitkovic name is one that certainly features on this list. The iconic #10 began his love-affair with the club as a junior from the age of 14. From here, “Mars”, as he is fondly known, went on to play seniors at St Albans Saints as a 15-year-old under Mark Silic. Upon returning to Knights, Cvitkovic represented the Youth squad during the final year of the NSL. Once the NSL disbanded, Cvitkovic took a break from football and returned to the club in 2012 where he has played since.

Knights TV spoke to Cvitkovic recently during the off-season, where he stated one of his favourite moments from past years:

“My favourite memory, apart from winning the individual Gold Medal award in 2013, would have to be the Dockerty Cup Grand Final victory in 2014, as well as our placings in the FFA Cup in both 2014 & 2016. Also having the opportunity to work alongside Aljosa and Dean last season was a fantastic experience.” – said Cvitkovic.

Cvitkovic, who played his 100th senior’s game for the club this year, sees nothing but good things on the horizon for the club. He states that ‘if he can do it, anyone can’; a strong message to those coming through the U18s and U20s ranks to keep pushing hard and to not give up the sight of a spot in the senior’s team, which Cvitkovic sees as a pinnacle in Victorian football.

Cvitkovic then went on to state his intentions as a player for the 2019 season and spoke passionately about how much the support of the fans means to him personally, as well as to the club as a whole; for the purposes of preservation of tradition and growth as a modern club:

“It would be fantastic to see us play in the finals playoff next season, as well as have a solid (FFA) cup run. We have a strong group and there are some emerging players that have really grown. The fans should be excited to see some positive results in 2019.”

Cvitkovic concluded by stating:

“We as a squad would love to see as much support week-in and week-out as possible from the Croatian community in order to support our club and to support one another.”
