The Melbourne Knights’ hopes of making the national league playoffs have been hit by the potential loss of star defender Steve Horvat, former skipper Jason Vukadin and fringe defender Ivan Zelic.

And key midfielder Lubo Lapsansky is battling to be fit for Friday night’s crunch clash with South Melbourne, after missing the Knights’ 5-2 loss to Wollongong at WIN stadium with an eye injury.

Horvat, who also missed the match against the defending champion on Saturday, has flown to the Netherlands for talks with Utrecht, while Vukadin and Zelic have gone to China for trials.

Knights coach Vlado Vanis made no secret of the importance of Horvat to his team.

“If Wollongong had him to play as sweeper they would win the league. He is a good player,” he said.

On Saturday’s form, the Wolves might retain the title as they are.

“If I made a selection from all the players in the NSL I would have still lost that game,” Vanis said.
