Celebration is in the air as the Melbourne Knights celebrate their 70th Birthday this Easter Monday at Somers Street!
The Melbourne Knights truly came to prominence in Australian soccer in the 1990’s, however, the journey started from a point of total obscurity some 40 years earlier in the western suburbs of Melbourne.
In April 1953, a small group of immigrants from Croatia gathered in a cramped weatherboard house in Leeds St., Footscray, and decided to legitimise their occasional game of social soccer by registering themselves as a club with the Victorian Soccer Federation.
On the 9th April, 1953, a church service, blessing the new team was held, and on the 10th April, 1953, the first whistle was blown, the first ball kicked, and as the first goal was scored, it’s more than certain that someone in the crowd commented that, “These boys play pretty good”.
To mark the momentous occasion, the club will be throwing it’s 70th Birthday Festa on the 10th of April, when they face-off against sister club – North Geelong Warriors FC! All fans, supporters, sponsors and members are invited to come along and help the club celebrate the occasion.
Melbourne Croatia will be in full swing as they open for lunch from 12pm onwards (no bookings required), with a special lamb spit on offer and providing loads of entertainment for the family, including:
• Free amusement rides (Dodgem Cars, Cha-Cha twists, Chair-o-planes, Giant Slides)
• Jumping castles
• Face painters
To entertain fans, a huge line up of entertainment has been pencilled in, including 4 Kuma in the clubrooms, the fantastic Steven Tivanovac from Prva Liga on the harmonica and DJ Takac in the Beer Garden, capped off with a performance by F.A. Hrvatska Zora maleni and prioremni in the clubrooms. All rides and amusements are free and running pre seniors match from 12pm and ending at 4pm, with musical entertainment provided throughout the day.
Aside from the family activities, the Knights will also be playing their round eight NPL match against North Geelong Warriors, with the U21’s kicking off at 2pm on pitch 2 and senior’s kicking off at 4pm on the main pitch.
Speaking on the event, President of the Melbourne Knight reflected on “how important it was to celebrate moments like this, not only to acknowledge amongst ourselves at how far we’ve come but to also signify to the wider community that we’re here and we’re still going on.”
With plenty on offer for the whole family to enjoy, there is no better way to spend Easter Monday this year than at Somers Street with us!
