Melbourne Knights have moved to second spot with a 2-0 win against Pascoe Vale at CB Smith Reserve on Friday night.
The match looked like it could be heading for a goalless draw before Robbie Zadworny broke the deadlock with his second goal in as many games.
Stipo Andrijasevic slid the ball through to the winger who dinked his shot past Paco goalkeeper Alex Pavlidis to put the Knights ahead in the 79th minute.
The result was put beyond all doubt in the 92nd minute as substitute Luke Jurcic slid in at the back post to convert a low cross from James McGarry, providing a special moment with the youngster’s first ever senior goal.
Vitale Ferrante’s side had the better of the first half and almost went ahead after six minutes when Davey van’t Schip rolled a shot across Chris May and inches wide of the post.
Alex Dao had an effort on target for the Knights ten minutes after half time, but Pavlidis was out quick to smother the effort.
That was before May outdid his opposite number with a reflex fingertip save to deny Luca Santilli when the home crowd was ready to celebrate.
The Knights kept it tight at the back though and Marijan Cvitkovic went close with a header shortly before Zadworny’s opener.
The result marks three consecutive wins for Andrew Marth’s men who jumped above South Melbourne and Heidelberg despite having played more matches.
I love you Melbourne
