Melbourne Knights add to their attacking line up with the signing of Papua New Guinea international striker, Tommy Semmy.
Known for his explosive speed, the 29-year-old has 16 caps for the PNG national side and joins Knights after departing Altona Magic at the end of the 2023 NPL Victoria season.
Semmy’s career isn’t only limited to the Victorian NPL, with the PNG national having started out in 2013 in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League with Besta United PNG. In 2015, Semmy made the move to Hekari United, where he also played in the OFC Champions League.
In July of 2016, he joined Marist FC of the Telekom S-League (commonly known as the Solomon Islands S-League). Later, in 2017, he joined Malatia Kingz FC of the same league. His 17 goals that season awarded him the Golden Boot for the league.
In 2017, he made the move to New Zealand, joining Norther League side, Hamilton Wanderers AFC, before moving to Australia at the end of 2021. While playing for Magic in the Vic NPL from season 2022, he also spent some time on loan to Dandenong City, before settling back into the club.
When asked what drew him to the Knights, Semmy stated:
‘I wanted to transfer to the Knights because it’s a big club with a big history. I want to be part of the successful and great history.’
He’s also eager for the season to get underway, stating:
‘I’m excited about being a part of the team and to make history together. I’m grateful for the opportunity, hopefully we will do great things and be successful.’
We’re excited to see what Semmy bring to the team up forward as well look to improve on our 70th year.
Semmy is the fourth and final new signing for the Knights this season. You can see Semmy and the rest of the team this Thursday at 8:15pm when the team kicks off their campaign for the 2024 season at Lakeside Stadium against traditional rivals, South Melbourne FC.
