Simmo is coming home

The Melbourne Knights would like to proudly announce that Club legend and former Croatian national team captain Joe Simunic will be back in Melbourne this coming weekend.
Simunic will be a guest of honour of the Melbourne Croatia Soccer Club and Melbourne Knights Football Club for dinner before Friday night’s opening match of the 2015 season.

Simunic will officially be kicking off the 2015 National Premier Leagues Victoria Round 1 clash between Melbourne Knights and newly-promoted Avondale FC this Friday at 8:30pm at Knights Stadium – following which he will make his way to the terraced outer of Knights Stadium known as Quarry Hill where he will mingle amongst the Club’s die-hard fans.

Born in Canberra, the young Joe turned out for local powerhouse Canberra Croatia (Deakin) before he was picked up by the Australian Insitute of Sport. An offer from the Melbourne Knights came along in 1996 when the young defender, likened to Beckenbauer at the time, won much praise and contributed immensely to the Club’s second national title as an 18 year old showing maturity beyond his years.

By 1998, Simunic had embarked on a European career which began with Hamburger SV where he was set back by a early knee injury. Two years later, the promising centre back was picked up by Hertha Berlin where he attained legendary status amongst the fans – amassing over 220 league games in 9 years.

Simunic made his international debut for the Croatian national team in November 2001 against South Korea. In total, Simunic appeared for the Croatian National team in 105 ‘A’ international games, scoring 3 goals. He is one of only three players to have surpassed 100 matches for the Croatian national team.

There will be music in the beer garden from 6pm and of course afterwards, as well as the outdoor bar being open. For Dinner bookings in the Melbourne Croatia Soccer Club please call (03) 9310 1842.
