South Melbourne defeated Melbourne Knights 4-3 at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday afternoon, to halt the Knights’ six-game undefeated streak.
A dominant first half by the home side saw them lead 3-1 at half time, thanks to goals by Shaun Timmins, Jamie Reed and Milos Lujic.
Stipo Andrijasevic found the net for Knights on the half hour mark. Daniel Visevic played a ball into the box from the right wing, finding Andrijasevic who tapped the ball past South keeper Jason Saldaris from close range.
The Knights worked their way back into the contest in the second half, and pegged another goal back in the 84th minute through Shayan Alinejad, who cut in from the left before shooting past Saldaris to restore hope of a comeback.
Chris May was solid between the sticks, pulling off a number of important saves from close range to keep the away side in the hunt.
Milos Lujic, however, found the back of the net in the 90th minute to all but end the contest.
Shayan Alinejad’s second goal of the game, Knights’ third, in the 92nd minute restored some pride for the visitors, but it was a case of too little, too late.
Like his first goal, Alinejad cut in from the left and hit a powerful strike on target. Saldaris saved the initial shot, but could only parry it back to Knights’ number 19, who made no mistake with his second effort, burying the ball in the net.
South was able to see out the remaining minutes to secure the three points.
Melbourne Knights’ next game is away to Goulburn Valley Suns on Saturday, 26 July. Kick off at McEwen Reserve, Shepparton is at 6:30pm.
