Knights re-sign Cavalry for 2016 Campaign

Season 2016 promises to be a big one for Melbourne Knights, as Andrew Marth’s squad continues to take shape. No fewer than 14 players have re-committed, as the Club looks to build on a top four finish last season. 

Ben Surey will pull on the famous red shirt for the seventh straight season, as the Englishman becomes the longest serving player of the current squad, having first signed for the Club in 2010. Having overcome lengthy injury spells, the former captain become a mainstay for the Knights’ last season making 23 appearances and scoring 1 goal.

A blistering second half to the season saw Stipo Andrijasevic bang home 9 goals to win the Club’s Best and Fairest award, and fans will be delighted to hear Stipo will continue to set Somers’ Street alight in 2016.

Centre-back Milan Batur managed to play every game last season, establishing a formidable partnership with Ivan Grgic (21 Games) as the pair are set to once again hold the defensive lines.

Marijan Cvitkovic has ended rumours by also re-signing for 2016, with the former Gold Medal winner contributing 4 goals from 18 appearances last season. Joining him is super-sub Chris Talajic who netted three goals, with none more important than the winner against South Melbourne at Knights Stadium.

Returning from a lengthy injury layoff in 2014, James McGarry made 25 appearances and netting 2 goals as the attacking midfielder made a successful comeback to the senior side, and will be looking to consolidate his position as a key player next season.

Goalkeeper Michael O’Farrell, who played a vital role in the side that won the Dockerty Cup in 2014 will also continue in 2016, whilst Josh Brekalo (19 games, 1 goal) and Robbie Zadworny (15 games, 3 goals) have committed to their second season at the Club, with the latter joining from North Geelong in the mid-season transfer window.

There are also contract extensions for youngsters Luke Jurcic (11 games, 1 goal), Anthony Katiforis (5 games), Anthony Dezic (3 games), while Caleb Mikulic has been promoted in the senior list.

In addition, the Knights’ have also added Stefan Cali, Nikola Jurkovic, Dean Campelj and Nick Glavan during the pre-season transfer window.
