Melbourne Knights has endured a painful end to its NPL campaign on Friday night, losing the Elimination Final to Hume City on penalties at Knights Stadium.
Stipo Andrijasevic gave the home side a wonderful start after just ten minutes with a cracking and precise header from James McGarry’s corner.
After a dominant first half display earned the Knights a 1-0 lead at the break, it was shattered three minutes into the second half when Marcus Schroen popped up to poke a goal in following a Hume corner.
From there the visitors grew in confidence and took the lead themselves on 70 minutes when the dangerous Jai Ingham smashed a shot into the bottom corner.
Andrew Marth’s men rallied and found an equaliser five minutes from time after a great run and cross from substitute Luke Jurcic set up Marijan Cvitkovic to dispatch his strike with composure.
The match was bound for extra time but not before the Knights had James McGarry sent off late on for a second bookable offence.
The home side acquitted themselves well with a man down for 30 more minutes until the fateful penalty shoot-out.
Four Knights players stepped up and placed their spot kicks in either corner, but four times Hume goalkeeper Chris Oldfield guessed the right way and pulled off a save to give Lou Acevski’s side a 0-2 win.
