PREVIEW: Saints v Knights

For the second time in as many weeks Melbourne Knights will prepare for a crucial relegation battle against a sister club sitting bottom of the table.

Last week’s 1-1 draw with North Geelong saw the Warriors overtake this weekends opponents St Albans Saints by virtue of goal difference.

Despite dominating for large periods of the contest, A Jason Hicks wonder strike was cancelled out by an own goal shortly after. The last two goals conceded by the Knights have been self-inflicted and a clear indication of the luckless run the team has been enduring.

This week’s contest looms as a final opportunity to rescue something from the season, with anything less than 3 points potentially leaving a chance of a finals berth too far out of reach.

Hicks’ goal last Friday night saw the Kiwi-international bring his total goal tally to 6 for the season, passing Elvis Kamsoba on 5 goals.

Sunday’s clash between the Saints & Knights will be the first league meeting in 6 years, however the sides are more than familiar with one another having faced off in the 2016 Australian Croatian Tournament final in Adelaide (St Albans Win) & 2017 Vic Cro Cup (Knights Win).

Andrew Marth will also have in-depth knowledge of the St Albans squad, with Caleb Mikulic & Anthony Katiforis switching red for blue last month, joining Rodrigo Covarrubias, Joey Monek, Chris May & Aaron Romien as former Knights currently calling Churchill Reserve home.

St Albans currently hold the unwanted stat of being the lowest scoring team in the league, scoring just 1 goal in the opening six rounds of the season, before securing a 1-0 win against Oakleigh Cannons in round 7.

A loss for the Saints on Sunday would leave the club at least 3 games behind in the relegation zone at just the midway point of the season, whilst a loss for the Knights will see them dragged into an unwanted relegation battle.
