Whyte becomes a Knight ahead of the 2023 season

Melbourne Knights are excited to confirm the signing of midfielder, Steve Whyte ahead of the 2023 NPL Victoria season.

The 26-year-old, who signs a two-year deal follows new Knights Head Coach, Ben Cahn to Somers Street from Olympic FC in Queensland.

Whyte made 142 appearances over five seasons for Olympic, scoring 21 goals as one of the NPL Queensland’s stand out players in a side that reached five Grand Finals and twice qualified for the Australia Cup National Rounds.

The midfielder who’s earned plaudits around the country for his technical ability and range of passing was named in the NPL Queensland Team of the Season in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Whyte, who operated primarily as a deep lying playmaker last season but is equally adept playing further forward in midfield was crowned Olympic’s Player of the Season for the second time in 2022.

Prior to his time at Olympic, Whyte played for Seattle Sounders 2 in the USL and captained Central Coast Mariners youth side where he also played for Cahn.

The midfielder who linked up with his new teammates for the first time as pre-season commenced last week said he couldn’t wait to get started at Somers Street.

“I decided to join Knights because I’m at a stage in my football where I needed a change of environment and fresh challenge and I felt like Melbourne Knights was the perfect place to do that,” Whyte said.

“I want to help the club be successful in everything we do, the way we attack and defend as we aim to get back to winning trophies, hopefully this is the year we can do that.”

Whyte, who will wear the number eight jersey joins Ivan & Joey Franjic as well as Gian Albano as Knights fourth confirmed signing ahead of the 2023 season.
